Bacteriostatic Water

Bacteriostatic Water (BW) is sterile water for injection that contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of bacteria, allowing the solution to be used for multiple withdrawals from the same vial over an extended period without contamination.

Unlike standard sterile water for injection, bacteriostatic water can be used repeatedly — making it ideal for reconstituting research peptides that require multi-dose use. It is commonly used in laboratory and research settings as a diluent and solvent for injectable compounds.

• Peptide reconstitution: Bacteriostatic water is the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilized research peptides, providing a stable, multi-use solution.
• Multi-dose stability: The benzyl alcohol preservative allows researchers to draw multiple doses from a single vial while maintaining sterility over time.

When reconstituting a lyophilized peptide for research use:

1. Allow the bacteriostatic water vial to reach room temperature before use.
2. Clean the rubber stopper of both vials with an alcohol swab and allow to air-dry.
3. Draw the required volume of bacteriostatic water into a syringe.
4. Inject the bacteriostatic water slowly into the lyophilized peptide vial, directing the stream along the inside wall of the vial rather than directly onto the powder.
5. Gently swirl the vial until the powder is fully dissolved. Do not shake vigorously.
6. Store the reconstituted solution refrigerated (2–8°C) when not in use.

• Unopened vials: Store at room temperature (15–30°C), away from direct light and heat.
• After opening: Store opened vials at room temperature and use within 28 days.
• Do not freeze: Freezing may compromise the integrity of the bacteriostatic preservative.
• Inspect before use: Do not use if the solution is cloudy, discoloured, or contains visible particles.
• Single-use packaging: Each vial is sealed for sterility — use standard aseptic technique when withdrawing.
